Ground Floor Extension and Full Retrofit, Ranelagh, Dublin 6
The project involves the ground floor extension of a single-family home located in Ranelagh, Dublin 6, with the aim of improving internal functionality, strengthening the connection to the exterior, and significantly enhancing the building’s energy performance.
The proposal includes a rear extension designed to accommodate a new kitchen and dining area, creating a contemporary, bright, and open space oriented towards the back garden. The extension was conceived to maximise natural light through carefully positioned openings and to provide a direct visual relationship with the outdoor space, resulting in a spacious and inviting environment suitable for modern family living.
In parallel, a full retrofit and energy upgrade were carried out throughout the property. This comprehensive intervention included high-performance thermal insulation, upgraded windows and doors, efficient heating and ventilation systems, and the integration of technologies focused on reducing energy consumption.
As a result of these improvements, the dwelling achieved an A1 energy rating, the highest classification within Ireland’s Building Energy Rating (BER) system. This ensures not only extremely low operational energy demand and reduced running costs, but also increased indoor comfort and long-term sustainability.
The outcome is a renewed, modern, and highly efficient home, where the ground floor extension integrates seamlessly with the existing structure, enhancing spatial quality and reinforcing the connection between interior and exterior.
